Description
GAZETTE OF THE UNITED STATES. Philadelphia: Published by John Fenno. Volume III, No. 114 (Wednesday, May 30, 1792). Tabloid [40 by 25.5 cm]. 4 pages. Disbound. General wear, with some chipping to spine [still glued from binding]. Tear on second leaf with loss of text [not affecting numismatic content on first leaf]. Good. Includes the entire text of the act authorizing the coinage of cents and half cents. “Be it enacted by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the director of the mint, with the approbation of the President of the United States, be authorized to contract for and purchase a quantity of copper, not exceeding one hundred and fifty tons, and that the said director, as soon as the needful preparations shall be made, cause the copper by him purchased to be coined at the mint into cents, and half cents pursuant to ‘the act establishing a mint, and regulating the coins of the United States,’ and that the said cents and half cents, as they shall be coined, be paid into the Treasury of the United States, thence to issue into circulation.” The Act goes on to provide a mechanism for the distribution of the copper coins and a timeline for phasing out the use of copper pieces other than those struck by the Mint. While not in the best of condition, the page including the significant Act is in perfectly acceptable condition. Of considerable importance. Ex David F.
